Chinese stocks and shares market: Business as usual?
13 July 2006, Paris. Meeting with Wang Ou, Secretary-General of the Committee for the Reform of Financial Markets at the CSRC. Mr Wang pointed out that the State’s interference in the economy had diminished since the opening up in the 1980s. He also insisted on the risks entailed by an excessive influx of FDI, calling for their better regulation. Regarding China’s domestic stock markets, Mr. Wang noted the success of reforms which paved the way for new developments. In his eyes, China’s stock markets will eventually reach international standards andthe role of the CSRC will be limited to regulating the exchanges and their developments.

Meeting with CICIR on terrorism

15 May 2006, Paris. Asia Centre participed in a meeting with a delegation from the CICIR (led by its Vice President Dr Yang Mingjie), on terrorism and counter-terrorism. The meeting involved Mr Li Wei, Ms Fang Jinying and Mr Gao Ying, and dealt with matters of counter-terrorism measures, relations with the Muslim community, the state of radical Islam in France, and views on relations between Europe and the Muslim world.

Russian Images of China, meeting with Nikolay Samoylov, Professor. The State University of Saint-Petersburg
5 May 2006, Paris. N. Samoylov set forth the range of Russian opinions about China, distinguishing images of China itself from the images that Russians have of it, which vary according to geography and period. In the process, this presentation displayed the way Russians think about themselves and their situation in North-East Asia. East, UK.

French and Chinese views on Europe-Asia cooperation and East Asian regionalisation, a meeting with the SIIS (Shanghai Institute for International Studies)
3 May 2006, Paris: exchange of views on  Sino-European relations, Asia-Europe cooperation, the Future of European integration, East Asian regionalization and security.
A meeting with a delegation of Chinese researchers from the SIIS, including its Vice-President Yang Jiemian and researchers Zhang Tiejun, Zhang Haiping, and Ms Fang Xiao. Opened by the SIIS on domestic issues, the discussion revealed that, while current Chinese leaders will have to meet political demands in the future, the elites are pro-CCP and active within the Party, while the PLA remains highly secretive. Regarding international issues, the relationship of the EU and China with the USA (arms embargo, cross-Strait questions) were addressed first, then the delegation turned to the themes of the pacific rise of China and free-trade.
