AGENDA
French and Chinese views on Europe-Asia cooperation and East Asian regionalisation, a meeting with the SIIS (Shanghai Institute for International Studies)
3 May 2006, Paris: exchange of views on Sino-European relations, Asia-Europe cooperation, the Future of European integration, East Asian regionalization and security.
A meeting with a delegation of Chinese researchers from the SIIS, including its Vice-President Yang Jiemian and researchers Zhang Tiejun, Zhang Haiping, and Ms Fang Xiao. Opened by the SIIS on domestic issues, the discussion revealed that, while current Chinese leaders will have to meet political demands in the future, the elites are pro-CCP and active within the Party, while the PLA remains highly secretive. Regarding international issues, the relationship of the EU and China with the USA (arms embargo, cross-Strait questions) were addressed first, then the delegation turned to the themes of the pacific rise of China and free-trade.
